statement on ice raids in mpls

Me da mucho dolor en mi corazón ver la violencia en contra de nuestras comunidades.

The sheer display of force that took place Tuesday on Lake and Bloomington, aided by county/city police at a time when immigrants live in fear, is unacceptable in a supposedly sanctuary city. Watching MPD protect/enable this act of force is deeply disturbing and is emblematic of the police state’s priorities: violence over meeting human needs.

Officials present were from ICE’s HSI (Homeland Security Investigations) and the operation was stated to be in collaboration with Enforcement and Removal (ERO). Shame on MPD for protecting them. ICE must be abolished and kept out of our city.

We will see intimidation/escalation over the next few years and we will need strong city leadership. We must be vigilant but careful not to speculate and spread rumors and fear. Please support the businesses and restaurants on Lake Street. The immigrant community needs support and love.
